Service Description

This tour hits the best highlights of the downtown region as we visit the Barrio Viejo, El Presidio and the western part of Downtown! We will meander through the historic Barrio Viejo past bright colored historic Sonoran Row Houses learning how they were built for our harsh summer climate! Then we visit the original natural spring that provided water to the walled Presidio with several interesting stories about it...followed by a stop at the El Tiradito Wishing Shrine where we learn the tragic tale that lead to the shrine being built. We stroll past a historic Spanish language theater and learn the many uses of the building over the years. Next, we meander past the bandstand to hear of a famous western outlaw that partied the night away in Tucson shortly before a historic gunfight...followed by a visit to the historic Pima County Courthouse to learn the tales of John Dillinger. Then we visit the charming El Presidio neighborhood with its stately mansions where Tucson's Pioneer Founders and prominent citizens once lived as we explore the fascinating tales of these individuals. Guests will see a rebuilt section of the adobe wall and discuss Tucson's Spanish Colonial Roots as a walled presidio. We conclude with the tales of mid century entrepreneurs and downtown department store tycoons plus learn of a historic luxury hotel and the only remaining southwest art deco styled theatre! We see several mansion homes and a former hotel designed by Henry Trost and three downtown buildings designed by Roy Place, two of which are in the decorative Spanish Colonial Revival style. Tour starting point address will be emailed with tour reservation confirmation and receipt. Three emails will be sent. Suggested: This tour involves 3 miles of walking and is approximately 3 hours. Please wear comfortable shoes, bring a bottle of water and wear sunscreen.
